Sankey, Ira David
- (28 August 1840, Edinburgh, Pa. – 13 August 1908, New York City)Writer and compiler of Gospel song , he met prominent evangelist Dwight L. Moody (1837–1899) in 1870 and rose to prominence when the two conducted revival meetings in England from 1873–1875,Moody preaching and Sankey accompanying himself in solo singing on a portable organ and leading the congregations. He published Sacred Songs and Solos (1st ed. London, 1873) whose subsequent editions grew to 1200 songs, and six volumes of Gospel Hymns and Sacred Songs (1875–1891).
